I feel like we need to re-normalize games not having to last forever or constantly getting updated. I see this with Deeprock Galactic where people complain because they grinded out all the new overclocks or dwarf jockstraps or whatever and now they’re bored.
Like that’s not what how the game should be played. Imagine someone going “Yeah I played Monopoly but then I bought every single property and now I’m waiting for the new version.”
Sometimes a game shouldn’t have to be about progression. It can just be a thing you play.
You most commonly see this with live service games, but this attitude has been seeping its way into singleplayer games as well. People will say “this game was all the rage for the last month or so and now no one’s talking about it anymore”, as if a game needs to exist in the public consciousness at all times to be deemed a success, or is at all a marker of its quality.
Sometimes a game comes out, you play it, it’s good, you enjoy your time with it, and you move on.
